Prices Cut on Slide & Negative Scanning
Great news, we’ve cut prices in many areas. Here’s what we’ve done.
First, we’ve cut the cost of slide and negative scanning from 75p per image to 45p. The majority of material we scan in these categories is 35mm, we do thousands each year so big savings can be heading your way.
Second we’ve clarified and reduced the cost of 110 slide and negative scanning. They’re now inline with other small format material such as 35mm. Physically 110 stock is usually mounted in the same sized plastic mounts as 35mm and so we treated them the same way. We’re now clarifying the cost of 110 negative scanning, and that too is consistent at 45p per frame.
Professional quality scanning. We have always scanned at 4,000 dpi to deliver the maximum detail from your slides and negatives. However when we started out some clients wanted their scans in TIFF format. These files are much bigger than standard jpg files and over ten years ago they took so much longer to move around, chewed up so many more CDs / DVDs. We felt justified in scanning these at a premium price. Today, we’re ending that. If you’d like TIFF files (previously the professional level service) for 35mm & 110 the price is the same.
Why are we doing this?
Good question. When we started looking at this I checked the web page which lists our prices. The last time we made any amendment to that page was four years ago, so a review was overdue. Financially we invested substantially in slide and negative scanning equipment from Nikon and Epson. Along the way we’ve added various bits such as film holders for 110 negatives. To be frank those costs have long been covered by the mountain of images we’ve scanned. That returned investment should be accounted for.
Incentives count too. Of course we scan a lot of material but we don’t scan it all. In some cases people don’t take up our offer, I don’t believe they go elsewhere, I don’t believe they buy their own scanners and take the DIY route. They ring back several times, my view is that the cost – the 75p sticker price – is the barrier. I hope this doesn’t sound too preachy but this is our social history that’s being left in boxes and at the back of drawers, to be lost for ever.
We will continue to offer a discount for volume slide & negative scanning. By “volume” we mean 200 or more, the exact level of discount will depend on factors such as the type of material involved and the exact number.
