Right from the start, when we began scanning photos, people have asked us if we can take care of the whole process. From scanning through to delivering the final photo album. When we started out getting a photobook printed was a pretty difficult process, by today’s standards the software was primitive, the process tortuous.
But that wasn’t why clients wanted to outsource their photobooks to us. It was design. If you’ve seen a professionally designed album you’ll know what I mean. The designers eye just puts a printed photo album into a different league. Sadly none of us here have the “designers eye” so I looked round for a freelance designer who we could do business with. I didn’t realise what a hard job it would be to find one. Eventually I tracked down a your lady in Brazil who was both a photographer and a designer, she did a few albums for us. It was great, clients were very happy. The process was pretty convoluted, there were time and many language issues, but clients were patient and universally blown away by the quality of the album they got. As soon as you looked at her layouts you could see us ordinary folk would never be able to get a result like that.
Until it all stopped.
Our designer’s photography business took off, there are only so many days in the week, something had to give. She reluctantly bowed out of the photobook design business. That left us with a gaping hole we haven’t been able to fill. Until now.
Our online photo albums are hosted by a service called Zenfolio. They listen. Not just to photo scanning services (I think we’re the only one on Zenfolio) but to the many professional photographers whose work they host. Lately they’ve added two major features – the first was the ability to properly view photo albums on mobile devices via a dedicated app; the second is now online and that’s the photo album design / print service. Click the link and that page will tell you more.
So if you want a brilliant photobook / photo album, perhaps for the most special of events, you can now access the service simply by clicking a button when you log into your online album. You have to have at least 40 images scanned (no upper limit) and you have to be comfortable with a design fee of $50 plus a shipping charge from the States of $50. The book itself is a premium, hand crafted item so that’s not cheap in itself, hence my feeling that clients will reserve this for special anniversaries, weddings, christenings and other family landmark events. Take a look at the vide and you’ll get a feeling for the level of quality involved in this service.
So here we are, some eleven years down the track, the album design service is there again, accessible via a click of the button you’ll see on your online album page.
